Philosophy for Everyone

On the 75th anniversary of Antonio Gramsci's death, Jason Read reminds us: "The widespread prejudice that philosophy is something which is very difficult because it is the intellectual activity of a specific category of specialist scholars or of professional and systematic philosophers must be destroyed." That, of course, is Gramsci, speaking against the characterization of philosophy, as such. What thinker, or image, or movement, has done the most to propel this idea, i.e.: that philosophy truly is for everyone? Or, conversely, what has retarded the movement.
