Francesco Clemente

Francesco Clemente

My first real experience with art, outside a secret childhood admiration for Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, came with an encounter with the work of Francesco Clemente at the Guggenheim.

Interestingly enough, this was around the same time that the Sensation exhibition was on at the Brooklyn Museum, and the Young British Artists emerged, inciting public outrage, and calls for censorship.

At the time, I was heavily influenced by Bataille and found an original rawness and materiality in Clemente's work. There is something visceral, almost violent, in his deceptive lines and not so vague innuendoes.
